The jelly roll or Swiss roll design is the design used in the majority of cylindrical rechargeable batteries,  including nickel–cadmium (Ni-Cd), nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH), and lithium-ion (Li-ion).  The design has this name because the cross section of the battery looks like a Swiss roll ^[from Wikipedia, ["Jelly roll"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jelly_roll_(battery))].

Swiss roll

A cylindrical [lithium-ion cell](/entry/tc-ec-cell-li) is a cylindrical [cell](/entry/tc-ec-cell-li) made from a single long "sandwich" of the positive electrode, separator, negative electrode, and insulating sheet which is then rolled and inserted into a hollow cylinder casing. This cell design is often called a "[jelly roll](/entry/tc-cell-jellyroll)" or "swiss roll" because the cross section looks like a swiss roll.

The 18650 cell has been used since the late 1990s and has been popular for a wide range of applications that
require a rechargeable battery - such as flashlights, laptops, power tools, and even electric vehicles. Due
to the popularity of the 18650 cell, they are usually an easily available, well-understood, and affordable
option.
